When you find yourself so out of breath that you are “puffing” or breathing quickly while at rest or after light exertion, it may be a sign of a cardiac or respiratory issue. It’s more likely that choking is the cause when breathing suddenly becomes difficult while eating, therefore you should act quickly and follow the first aid measures listed below. It is crucial to get medical attention right away if you experience any of the symptoms included in this diagnostic PDF because there is a chance that you have a significant disease that could endanger your body’s ability to get enough oxygen.
CAUTION!
Severe respiratory difficulties
A serious breathing problem AND/OR bluish tint around the lips indicates an EMERGENCY requiring prompt medical intervention. Loosen any tight clothing and encouraging the patient to sit up straight can be done while you wait for medical assistance to arrive. Apply first aid as described below, if necessary.
FIRST AID FOR CHOCKING (HEIMLICH MANEUVER)
If a person experiences significant breathing problems while eating and is unable to cough the obstruction up, use the following actions.
- Press one first (with the thumb inside) against the waist while supporting the victim from behind in a standing position. Push firmly in and up under the rib cage while holding your other hand over the first.
- The backs of unconscious sufferers should be supported. Using the heel of your palm to perform an abdominal thrust while kneeling atop the victim’s thighs. 6 to 10 times.
- Open the victim’s mouth and sweep a hooked finger well inside to look for any obstructions.
- Perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if breathing does not resume after the blockage has been removed.
