Heartburn is typically induced by a little backflow of acid juices from the stomach into the esophagus (gullet). It is typical throughout pregnancy, although it is likely to be more severe in the latter months as the baby grows and the uterus expands. Heartburn is uncomfortable, but it causes no risk to your or your baby’s overall health.
HEARTBURN SELF-HELP
If you get heartburn at any point of your pregnancy, the self-help actions listed below might help to prevent and ease the discomfort;
- Avoid eating large meals, especially those that are fried or highly spiced.
- Quit smoking and drinking alcohol.
- Do not wear maternity girdles that are too tight.
- If you have nighttime heartburn, drink a glass of milk before bed and sleep propped up with pillows.
If such self-help measures are ineffective, consult your doctor, who may prescribe a safe antacid prescription for you to consume.
