The word “swollen glands” typically refers to swelling of one or more lymph glands, which is occasionally accompanied by soreness. You should see a doctor because this is an unusual symptom in infants under a year old that is challenging for parents to diagnose. In older children, mild illnesses frequently cause the glands, particularly those in the neck, to enlarge substantially, but this is rarely a cause for concern. Nonetheless, chronic or widespread gland swelling must always be mentioned to your doctor.
Lymph glands
The lymphatic system is made up of lymph glands (or nodes) connected by watery fluid-filled tubes (lymph). Large quantities of lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cell that fights infection, are present in the glands. The lymph glands, particularly those close to the skin’s surface, clearly swell when a lot of microorganisms are present.
